About
The Kottiyoor Shiva temple is known as the ‘Varanasi of the South. There are, actually, two Shiva temples here – the Akkare Kottiyoor and the Ikkare Kottiyoor, located on two sides of River Bavali. Both of them can be reached only by journeying through dense forests.
The temples are associated with the Daksha yagna of Hindu mythology. The temple festival, which lasts 28 days, falls in the month of May. Devotees from far-off regions come to attend the festival which begins with the Neyyattam.
During the ritual Neyyattam, a sword kept at the temple of Muthirikavu in Tavinal village is brought to Ikkare Kotttiyoor. Ghee (clarified butter) is then poured ceremoniously on the sword.
The Akkare Kottiyoor temple - there is really no formal structure of a temple here - remains open only on festival days. Devotees offer tender coconut to the deity and the elaneerattam, pouring tender coconut water on the idol is an important ritual here.
