From ancient times Thirunavaya was known throughout India as a centre of excellence for Vedic teachings, with Veda Paadda Saalas (Thirunnavaya Otthanmmar Maddom) for teaching the Vedas, Sasthras, Tantric Mantras, performing of rituals and preaching under learned scholars.
Pazhayangadi Mosque, Kondotti is located 18 km east of Manjeri. The three day long Valia Nercha feast at this 500 year old Muslim pilgrim centre, celebrated in February/March, is a local cultural event. This mosque with its lovely white dome is unique as it embodies facets of Mughal architecture.
An important feature of Ponnani Juma Masjid is the lamp which is nearly 500 years old. The mosque at Ponnani was once an important centre for Islamic philosophy and doctrine. Students from all over the world came here to acquire knowledge. It is believed that they sat under the very oil lamp.
