About
Called the 'Dakshina Kashi', lying on the shores of the mesmerising Arabian Sea, and constantly drawing in people in the thousands, the Thrikkannad Shiva Temple is easily among the most holiest sites in God's Own Country. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, various customs and rituals are performed here for the well - being of the souls of the dead. The new moon draws devotees for the sacred procedure of pithrutharppanam (homage to the forefathers with idols made of gold and silver). People take a holy dip in the sea to commemorate the entire event.
Festival activities engulf the area between March and April. Theyyam and Thidambu Nritham performances are seen around the place. The entire event begins with the Kodiyettam (flag hoisting) and ends with the Pallivetta or the Royal Hunting Expedition. The hunt is said to symbolise the destruction of Kama (desire), Krodha (anger) and other vices that plague humans. It is also well known for being among the rare west-facing temples in the world.
