About
Thirunavaya Navamukunda Temple is an ancient temple on the banks of Barathapuzha in a small village called Thirunavaya a known pilgrim centre situated 8 km south of Tirur near Kuttippuram in the Malappuram district of Kerala. This temple is one of the oldest Vishnu temples in Kerala which dates back to the period of the 'Dwaapara Yuga'. The main rituals and offering in this temple is Ney Vilakku, Thaamara maala and Paal paayasam. The unique thing about the idol of Lord Vishnu in this temple is that it is knee deep into the ground which you cannot see anywhere in the country. The story behind this is that in Kerala there is a custom that when a idol of a god is installed the main sanctum is kept closed for seven days and in this temple after installing the idol and when they opened the door the idol was missing and this went on eight times and when the ninth idol was installed they open the door before the time and found that the idol had descended knee deep into the ground and in order to stop that they conducted poojas and chanted mantras to ensure that the idol does not descend further. It is believed that the day the entire idol descend to the ground the Kaliyug will end.
